The Coming Train Wreck in America

Somehow we all seem to think that the individual we elect as President of the United States will actually be able to make a difference in the direction in which our nation is headed. I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but we are on this train until the wreck. And it will wreck. How bad is another issue. (Gloom and Doom soothsayers have been with us a long, long time.)

We hear the President being upbeat and positive about so many things, and I'm not downplaying the importance of being upbeat, but there's so many things that are wrong in our nation that are not being addressed by the leadership. Well, let me correct that. They're not being addressed with the right perspective, philosophy, and aggression. There is so much political correctness in our nation that we've hamstrung ourselves.

For example, in our effort to insure that we don't become sponsors of torture and sanction it, we bring the issue up in a way that not only enrages our enemies and enables them to point the finger at us, but it politicizes the issue. This is an issue that ought never have become a political hot button. We take so much pride in our ability to work with other nations, even hostile ones, in a diplomatic fashion, working behind the scenes, and negotiating in quiet, secret sessions. But, when it comes to an issue that can endanger American lives, and can actually cause Americans to be tortured by enemies who, in their minds, legitimize it because of our actions, we suddenly go stupid. We can't seem to work this out quietly, behind the scenes.

Our national stupidity is stunning.

It is a shame that our leaders do not realize the harm they are putting our military men and women into. If we legitimize torture techniques then how can we expect them to do anything less. Possible our leaders do know this and are just ambivalent about the whole thing. After all it is not them who will undergo torture.
